Fairfax, Va.--Mason's softball team claimed its second win over Drexel this weekend with a 1-0 victory against the Dragons Sunday afternoon at George Mason Field for the Patriots' final regular season game of the 2007 campaign. With this Colonial Athletic Association win, Mason ends the year with a 19-34 overall record and a 5-16 mark in conference play, while Drexel falls to 18-20 on the year (7-13).
Junior Kristin Dickel had a 2-for-2 showing at the plate against DU, including a single to right field at the bottom of the fourth for her 46th hit of the season. Freshman Shaniqua Steele pinch ran for Dickel and advanced to second after junior Lesely Hassen snuck a bunt single up the third base line. Junior Emily Miller was next in the line-up and connected on a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners and Steele scored after sophomore Sarah Martin hit a fly foul ball to left field.
In the top of the fifth, sophomore Lisa Williams smacked a triple to center field for Drexel and crossed home plate after sophomore Christina Rodriguez hit a double. However, Rodriguez was tagged out on the play by Dickel and interference was called by Rodriguez so Williams had to return back to third base. The next batter, senior Lena Aiken, grounded out to shortstop for the third out of the inning.
In Drexel's last chance to score in the game, the Dragons had one on and two outs in the seventh, but Williams grounded out to third base for the last out of the contest.
Freshman Becky Anderson improved her record to 9-15 on the year after allowing only six hits, while walking two and striking out two in seven innings of work, while freshman Katrina Gaudier collected the loss as she allowed one run off of six hits in six innings.
Mason will return to action at the beginning of the 2008 season.
