Junior Brian Hay (Kingston, Jamaica/Calabar) placed fifth out of seven competitors in the third heat of the preliminary rounds of the 110-meter hurdles on the opening day of the NCAA East Regional Track and Field Championships, held at James G. Pressly Stadium on the campus of the University of Florida in Gainesville, Fla.
Running in lane four, Hay crossed the finish line in 14.83 seconds, which ranked 21st out of the 27 competitors in the event. Dominic Berger, a junior from Maryland, won the heat with a time of 14.27 seconds to automatically qualify for tomorrow's finals in the event. Nobody else in the heat qualified for the finals.
The men's 110-meter hurdles featured four heats, with eight athletes advancing to tomorrow's finals - the winner of each heat, plus the next four best times. Advancing to the finals are Florida's Dennis Martin, who clocked in with the top time in the preliminary heats with a time of 13.96 seconds, South Carolina's Thomas Hilliard (13.97), Appalachian State's Charles Derrickson (14.07), Winthrop's Kandrick Cooper (14.14), Hampton's Andrew Peresta (14.23), Maryland's Adam Durham (14.24), Howard's Daniel Kinney (14.26) and Berger (14.27).
The NCAA East Regional Championships continue tomorrow with the first event, the women's hammer throw, slated to begin at noon. The finals of the men's 110-meter hurdles will be held tomorrow at 6:15 p.m. The top five finishers in each individual event will automatically qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, scheduled for June 6-9 in Sacramento, Calif.
