April 3, 2007

RICHMOND, Va. - The Colonial Athletic Association honored six student-athletes with the weekly track and field honors for their impressive individual performances for the week ending on April 1. One of those six student-athletes was George Mason's own Murielle Ahoure (Bristow, Va./Hayfield Secondary), who received the CAA Women's Track Athlete of the Week award.

Ahoure finished the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.46 seconds to earn a first-place finish at the Mason Spring Classic. The sophomore ran a faster time (11.41 seconds) in the preliminary heats, which is the second-fastest time in George Mason history in the 100-meter dash, trailing only Cydonie Mothersill's school record of 11.39 seconds set in 1999. Ahoure has qualified for the NCAA East Regional Championships in the 100-meter dash.

Also earning conference honors for the women were James Madison's Adrienne Mayo (Reston, Va./South Lakes) and Northeastern's Zara Northover (Elmont, N.Y./Sewanhaka). Mayo and Northover shared CAA Women's Field Athlete of the Week honors.

Mayo qualified for the NCAA East Regional Championships in the triple jump with a leap of 12.32 meters. The senior jumper also qualified for the ECAC Championships with a second-place leap at the Charlotte Invitational. Northover qualified for the NCAA East Regional Championships in the shot put with a first-place throw of 14.33 meters. The senior also earned first place in the discus throw with a toss of 41.22 meters at the Snowflake Classic.

William & Mary's Keith Bechtol (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Jefferson) was named the CAA Men's Track Athlete of the Week. Northeastern's Nate Hunter (Gloucester, Mass./Gloucester) and VCU's Davion Lambert (Richmond, Va./Varina) were selected as the CAA Men's Field Athletes of the Week.

In the men's track events, Bechtol qualified provisionally for the NCAA East Regional Championships with a time of 28:55.57 in the 10,000-meter run, which is only 10 seconds off an automatic bid to the championships. His time qualified him provisionally for the USATF National Championships and also made an Olympic Trials "B" cut. The senior set a personal-record by 30 seconds. Bechtol's time at the Stanford Cardinal Invitational ranks him third all-time in William & Mary history, following All-Americans Matt Lane and Ken Halls.

Hunter finished with a distance of 16.46 meters in the shot put and 45.44 meters in the discus to qualify for the IC4A Championships. The sophomore placed first in the shot put and second in the discus. Lambert continued to showcase his talent as he achieved a first-place leap of 7.13 meters in the long jump at the Mason Spring Classic. The senior currently owns the best jump of the season with a mark of 7.71 meters in the same event and tops the league with a 2.14 meter performance in the high jump accomplished earlier this season.
