Charlottesville, Va.--George Mason University's softball team (15-32) dropped both games of a doubleheader to the University of Virginia (17-34) earlier this afternoon at The Park. The Patriots were edged by a score of 3-2 in the first contest and then dropped a 9-1 decision in the nightcap.
In the first game, sophomore Meghan Hill connected on a single to left field in the first inning, and sophomore Kelsey Mack followed with another single. Freshman Becky Anderson was next in the line-up and collected an RBI after hitting a single to the left side to score Hill and advance Mack.
Mason tied the game at two in the top of the fifth after Mack crossed home plate off of a single by junior Kristin Dickel. The Cavailiers scored the game-winning run in the seventh after Elea Crockett smacked a single to second base, which scored Casey Steffan.
Anderson pitched the entire game for the Patriots and gave up three runs, two earned, off of seven hits, while walking two and striking out one of the 29 batters she faced. Coty Tolar started things off for the Cavaliers in the circle and gave up two runs, one earned off of six hits in 4.2 innings of work, but teammate Whitney Holstun earned the win for UVA after allowing no hits and striking out one in 2.1 innings.
In the second contest of the day, Dickel had a 2-for-2 showing at the plate and scored Mason's lone run in the top of the fourth after Julia Pillow singled to the pitcher to earn the RBI. UVa scored two runs in the first inning, four in the second and added three runs in the bottom of the third.
Sophomore Rachel Hastings record now stands at 2-5 in the circle on the year after she gave up six runs off of six hits in just over one inning of action. Paige Krystofinski relieved Hastings and gave up three runs, one earned, off of three hits in 2.2 innings of work. Holstun earned the win for the Cavaliers as she gave up one run, off of six hits, while striking out two of the 18 batters she faced.
The Patriots will return to action when they face Delaware in Newark, Del. on April 28 for a doubleheader, with the first game beginning at 12 p.m.
