George Mason (6-9, 1-5 CAA) was unable to hold onto a 5-3 second period lead, falling to the Old Dominion Lady Monarchs (6-7, 3-3 CAA) by a goal, 8-7, in Colonial Athletic Association women's lacrosse action at Foreman Field in Norfolk, Va. on Sunday afternoon.
The Patriots faced an early 2-0 deficit after Old Dominion's Kelly Kimener and Ashley Stanwick scored goals. Kimener found the back of the net at the 22:43 mark of the first period, while Stanwick fired a shot past Mason freshman goalkeeper Sara Longobucco with 18:16 remaining in the period.
George Mason scored its first goal of the game at the 15:39 mark when freshman midfielder Kelly Davis scored for the 32nd time this season. After Davis' goal, the Patriots tacked on two more scores, one by junior attacker Laura King, her 33rd of the year, with 14:51 remaining, and the other by freshman attacker Megan Udovich, who scored with 13:51 remaining off a pass from King.
Old Dominion's Kaelyn Schival halted the 3-0 Patriot scoring run with a goal at the 7:55 mark to tie the game at three. Kimener assisted on the goal. After a scoring drought of nearly eight minutes, Davis fired a shot past ODU goalkeeper Sara Larson with 15 seconds remaining in the period to put the Patriots on top by a goal at the half.
After the break, Mason's offense put the first points of the second period on the board when senior attacker Melissa Venturi scored off an assist from senior midfielder Melissa Curry to give the Patriots a 5-3 lead with 23:27 left in the game. After Venturi's goal, the Patriots' offense was unable to put another score on the board until 4:10 remained in the game, a drought of 19:17.
Meanwhile, Old Dominion scored the next four goals of the game to take a 7-5 lead. Venturi's goal at the 4:10 mark cut the deficit to one, but ODU's Ashley Kellogg answered back with a goal of her own to increase the Lady Monarchs' lead to 8-6. Udovich scored her second goal of the game off a free-position shot with 2:09 remaining to cut the deficit to 8-7 but it was the last goal the Patriots would score in the game.
Davis, Venturi and Udovich all scored two goals in the game. Venturi also caused four turnovers and grabbed three ground balls in the game to go along with her pair of goals. Sophomore defender Maggie Bridges tallied five ground balls for the Patriots and Longobucco recorded 10 saves in the loss.
Stanwick led all players with three goals in the game for the Lady Monarchs. Senior Katie Veneziale had three draw controls, three caused turnovers and six ground balls in the game. Larson saved 13 shots for Old Dominion, including nine in the second period.
George Mason finishes up its 2007 season with a game against No. 9 James Madison on Sunday, April 29 at 2 p.m. at George Mason Stadium. The Patriots' five seniors will be honored in a ceremony prior to the start of the game.
