Fairfax, Va.--Freshman Becky Anderson hit her fourth home run of the season and earned two RBI against Towson Sunday afternoon, but Mason came up short against the Tigers in a Colonial Athletic Associatin match-up by a score of 6-3 at George Mason Field. With this loss, the Patriots now own an overall record of 15-30 (1-14 CAA), while TU evens its record at 23-23 (7-7).
Jen Hastings scored Towson's first run in the top of the first after Nina Navarro hit a sacrifice fly to center field. The Tigers then added to their run total in the fourth with two unearned runs scored, after Ashley Stiner hit a single up the middle. The final three runs for TU came in the fifth after Aimee Rosa smacked a home run to center field, which brought home Megan Zwoyer and Navarro.
Anderson was the second batter in the sixth when she hit her home run, which brought home sophomore Meghan Hill who reached first after connecting on a single to left field. Junior Lesley Hassen, who tallied two hits on the afternoon, hit her second double of the season in the same inning, while junior Kat Winter and sophomore Rachel Hastings followed suit and each tallied a single. Mason was unable to score any more runs in the sixth as the inning ended with the bases loaded. In the proceeding inning, Hill connected on a single to shortstop and scored Mason's final run after Hassen reached on a fielder's choice.
Anderson's earned the loss for Mason as she gave up six runs, four earned, off of nine hits in 4.1 innings of work, while Paige Krystofinski relieved Anderson and gave up two hits, while walking one and striking one of the 11 batters she faced. Shannon Johnston improved her record to 11-7 on the year as she allowed three runs off of 11 hits and fanned seven Patriots.
Mason will take a break from conference action as the Patriots next face Virginia for a doubleheader on April 25 in Charlottesville, Va.
