Fairfax, Va.--Sophomore Kelsey Mack (Reading, Pa.) hit her first career grand slam in the bottom of the third inning against Towson and collected a total of seven RBI in Mason's 7-4 win over the Tigers Wednesday afternoon at George Mason Field. The Patriots came up short in the second game of the Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader, falling 4-0 to TU. Mason now owns an overall record of 15-29 (1-13 CAA), while the Tigers are 22-23 (6-7) on the year.
Heading into the third, Mason was down by a score of 1-0 as Towson scored its run in the first inning. Mack came to bat with one out and the bases loaded and sent one sailing over the fence for her second showing at the plate of the afternoon.
In the proceeding inning, sophomore Paige Miller connected on a double, sophomore Dee Murray was hit by pitch to reach first and sophomore Ali Bryan hit a bunt single. Mack came up and smacked a single, which drove in both Murray and Bryan to push Mason's lead to 6-1. In Mack's last at-bat, she connected on a double to left center field in the sixth, which sent Bryan across home plate for the third time. TU scored two runs in the sixth and was able to tack on another run in the seventh, but came up short and Mason claimed its first CAA victory.
Freshman Becky Anderson improved her record in the circle to 6-12 on the year as she only gave up three runs, off of three hits, while walking three and striking out one in 5.1 innings of work. Junior Arielle Weinkofsky relieved Anderson and gave up one unearned run off of two hits. Senior Jillian Kiley earned the loss for the Tigers as she gave up six runs, off of eight hits, while striking out one and walking one of the 22 batters she faced.
In the second contest, the Tigers scored their first run in the first after junior Nina Navarro hit a home run to left field. The score remained tight for through the sixth inning, but the Tigers added to their lead in the top of the seventh as freshman Emily Gould hit a single and scored after freshman Katie Purcell reached on an error. The next batter for TU was senior Jen Hastings and she hit a two-run home run to push the Tigers lead to 4-0.
Weinkofsky pitched the entire game for the Patriots and earned the loss (4-12) as she gave up four runs, one earned, off of six hits. Shannon Johnston earned the win for TU as she only allowed five hits in seven innings in the circle.
The three-game series will wrap-up on April 22 at George Mason Field, with a 1 p.m. start time.
