FAIRFAX, Va. -
George Mason will play its second home game of the week when it hosts the William and Mary Tribe in a Colonial Athletic Association women's lacrosse contest slated for a 7 p.m. start on Friday at George Mason Stadium. The Patriots are in the midst of a stretch where they will play three games in a span of six days.
Both teams enter the game with identical 0-4 records in conference play. Mason is 5-8 overall, while the Tribe are 2-11 with their only wins coming against Longwood and Saint Mary's (Calif.). Both teams will be attempting to snap lengthy losing streaks on Friday evening. The Patriots enter the contest on a five-game losing streak, while the Tribe are winless in their last seven games.
Mason played well in its last game against No. 7 Virginia but were unable to pull off the upset, falling by a final score of 12-6 on Tuesday evening at George Mason Stadium. The Patriots played a strong first period, trailing by only a single goal at the half, before the Cavaliers pulled away in the second period.
The Patriots rank in the top-10 in the nation in both caused turnovers and ground balls per game. Mason is fifth in the country in caused turnovers, averaging 11.08 per contest, and ninth in ground balls per game, with 20.92 per game. Sophomore defender Maggie Bridges is sixth in the nation in ground balls per game with an average of 3.42.
Although the Tribe are having a down season compared to last year's 10-7 overall record and 5-2 finish in the CAA, which tied them for second place in the standings, senior midfielder Kristen Wong has been a bright spot, ranking second in the nation in ground balls per game (3.85) and 12th in caused turnovers (2.23).
William and Mary has just one player with more than 20 goals - junior midfielder Jaime Sellers - who has 28 on the season. George Mason has three players who have scored more than 20 goals this year. Junior attacker Laura King leads the team with 31, freshman midfielder Kelly Davis has 29 and freshman attacker Megan Udovich has 21.
Friday's game will be the Broadside Game of the Week. George Mason students will receive free fleece blankets while supplies last. Also, there will be lucky number giveaways throughout the game for those in attendance.
Tickets to Friday's game will cost $5 for adults and $2 for youth and senior citizens. All full-time enrolled students at George Mason University will receive free admission with a valid student ID.
