Washington, D.C.--George Mason scored 15 total runs Wednesday afternoon to sweep Georgetown in a non-conference doubleheader at Guy Mason Field. The Patriots won the first contest by a score of 8-3 and then went on to claim a 7-3 victory in the second game. Mason's overall record now stands at 14-28, while the Hoyas fall to 8-35 on the year.
In the first game, Mason exploded in the third inning with seven runs scored. Sophomores Ali Bryan, Kelsey Mack and Paige Miller each collected two RBI in the third as each connected on at least one single. Junior Kristin Dickel added on to the hit total and was also one of seven Patriots to score a run in that inning. Dickel, who finished with a 3-for-4 showing at the plate, tacked on another run for the Patriots as she hit a solo homerun in the top of the seventh. The Hoyas scored all three of their runs in the fourth inning.
Junior Arielle Weinkofsky relieved sophomore Rachel Hastings and only allowed two hits, while striking out four batters in four innings of work to collect the win. Jennifer Connell earned the loss for the Hoyas as she gave up eight runs, three earned, off of seven hits and struck out five of the 34 batters she faced.
In the second contest, Mason scored its first two runs in the second inning. Miller was the fifth at bat and she singled through the right side to score junior Kat Winter from third. Sophomore Sarah Martin, who hit a single up the middle, also scored off of a GU throwing error. GU then went up by a run as the Hoyas came across home plate three times in the bottom of the third inning.
The Patriots tied it up the next inning and broke the tie in the top of the seventh. With the bases loaded and one out, Mack smacked a double through the left side to score both Bryan and sophomore Dee Murray. Dickel, with two outs, added to her hit total of the day as she connected on a double, which brought both freshman Becky Anderson and Mack across home plate. In the bottom of the seventh, with two out and two on, Suria Bahadue hit a line drive right to Winter's glove for the final out of the contest.
Anderson tacked on another win as she was in the circle the entire game for the Patriots. Anderson allowed three runs, off of six hits, while striking out six and walking three of the 32 Hoyas she faced. Connell also pitched this game for the Hoyas and gave up seven runs, six earned, off of 11 hits.
The Patriots will return to action when they host Towson for a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series this weekend, beginning with a doubleheader on April 21 at George Mason Field (12 p.m.).
