George Mason University's men's and women's track and field teams hosted their first meet of the outdoor season, the Mason Spring Classic, on Saturday afternoon at George Mason Stadium. Three athletes hit qualifying standards for the women's team, while freshman Michael Pachella qualified for the IC4A Championships in the 800-meter run for the men's team.
The women's 100-meter dash wasn't even a contest as sophomore Murielle Ahoure put on a show for the home crowd, finishing in first place with a time of 11.46 seconds in the finals. The second-place finisher, Hampton University's Yvette Lewis, ran a time of 11.74 seconds. Ahoure actually ran a faster time in the preliminary heats, crossing the finish line in 11.41 seconds, which is the second-fastest time in George Mason history in the 100-meter dash, trailing only Cydonie Mothersill's school record of 11.39 seconds, set in 1999. The Bristow, Va. native has already qualified for the NCAA East Regional Championships in the event.
In the 400-meter dash, freshman Tiara Swindell placed fourth with a time of 55.83 seconds to qualify for the ECAC Outdoor Championships. Swindell already qualified for the ECAC Championships in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.51 seconds at the Hurricane Invitational.
Sophomore Ryann Hendricks finished second in the triple jump with a leap of 12.20 meters. She trailed only Virginia's Tomika Ferguson, who jumped 12.76 meters to win the event. The mark qualifies Hendricks for the ECAC Outdoor Championships. The Chicago, Ill. native already qualified for the ECAC Championships in the long jump at last weekend's LSU Tiger Relays.
On the men's side, Pachella qualified for the IC4A Outdoor Championships in the 800-meter run, finishing fourth with a time of 1:52.37. Pachella also qualified for the IC4A Championships in the event during the recently completed indoor season.
In the field events, junior Michael Wade finished fourth in the high jump with a mark of 1.95 meters. Wade also competed in the long jump, placing sixth with a jump of 6.82 meters.
In the team scoring, Penn State tallied the most points for both the men and women. The Nittany Lions' men's team scored 63.5 points, while the women scored 144 points. George Mason's men's and women's teams both finished 11th.
The men's team will travel to Williamsburg, Va. to compete at the Colonial Relays next weekend, while the women's team will travel to Gainesville, Fla. to compete at the Florida Relays. George Mason will host its second meet of the outdoor season, the Mason Outdoor Invitational, on Saturday, May 5 at George Mason Stadium.
