Fairfax, Va.--Mason split its two games on the final day of the Patriot Classic on Sunday afternoon as Cornell (3-0) claimed a 9-0 victory in the first contest and Mason (4-5) defeated Central Connecticut (1-3) by a score of 4-2 in the final game.
Against CCSU, Mason scored its first run in the third inning after Dee Murray reached on an error, which scored sophomore Meghan Hill, who had a 2-for-2 showing at the plate. The Blue Devils tied the game in the fourth after Pam Shifrin smacked a homerun to centerfield and then CCSU took the lead after Carom connected on a double to send Sara Budrick home in the same inning.
Hill led off with a single in the fifth and sophomore Kelsey Mack collected an RBI as she hit a single, which tied the game at two. Freshman Becky Anderson followed Mack in the line-up and lifted Mason ahead of the Blue Devils as she sent one over the fence for her first homerun of her collegiate career, which scored herself and Mack. The Patriots were able to hold on to the lead as the final two innings for CCSU saw three ground outs, two strike-outs and one foul fly play.
Anderson pitched the first three innings for the Patriots and gave up five hits, while striking out two of the 11 batters she faced. Sophomore Ali Bryan earned her first win of the season as she gave up two runs, one earned, off of three hits, while striking out one and walking one of 10 Blue Devils in two innings. Junior Arielle Weinkofsky tallied her second save of the year and struckout two of the six batters she faced in two innings of work.
Against Cornell, junior Amanda Bach opened things up as she did the two previous games, as she connected on one of her fourth doubles of the weekend. Junior Kristin Dickel had a 2-for-2 showing at the plate versus The Big Red as she connected on a single in both the second and fourth innings.
Rachel Hastings earned the loss gave up eight runs, seven earned, off of nine hits in four innings on the mound. Haley Mirrer collected the win for Cornell as she only allowed three hits in five innings of work, while striking out six and walking three Patriots.
The Patriots will return to action when they face Youngstown State on March 11 (9 a.m.) in their own Mason Invitational.
