FAIRFAX, Va. - George Mason University's men's and women's track and field teams will host their first meet of the 2007 outdoor track and field season, the Mason Spring Classic, on Saturday at George Mason Stadium. The meet is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. with the women's hammer throw, men's javelin throw, men's pole vault and women's long jump. The running events will start an hour later with the finals of the women's 5,000-meter run. The meet will wrap up at 6 p.m. with the finals of the men's 4x400-meter relay.

In addition to George Mason, 14 men's teams and 15 women's teams will compete at the meet. Included amongst those teams are Georgetown, Howard, Penn State and Virginia.

The women's team has competed at three meets in the early part of the outdoor season - the Hurricane Invitational, the LSU Tiger Relays and at the Naval Academy. Sophomore Murielle Ahoure won the 100-meter dash at the Hurricane Invitational with a time of 11.49 seconds, which qualifies her for both the NCAA East Regional Championships and the ECAC Championships. At the same meet, freshman Tiara Swindell qualified for the ECAC Championships in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.51 seconds. At the LSU Tiger Relays, sophomore Ryann Hendricks qualified for the ECAC Outdoor Championships in the long jump with a mark of 5.80 meters (19 ft. 0.50 in.).

The men's team has only competed at one meet during the 2007 outdoor season, at last weekend's Wake Forest Open. Junior Brian Hay highlighted the weekend for the Patriots, reaching the finals of the 110-meter hurdles and qualifying for the IC4A Outdoor Championships in the event with a time of 14.57 seconds in the finals.

The Patriots will host two meets during the outdoor season. Their second outdoor meet of the year, the Mason Outdoor Invitational, is scheduled for Saturday, May 5 at George Mason Stadium. George Mason track and field meets are free and open to the public.
