Fairfax, Va.-- Mason's softball squad split with George Washington Wednesday afternoon at George Mason Field as the Patriots lost the first game by a score of 1-0 and claimed a 3-1 victory in the nightcap. The Patriots now own an overall record of 11-18, while GWU is now 11-12 on the year.
In the first game, GWU held Mason to just three hits, all of which happened in the bottom of the fifth inning. Junior Kristin Dickel started things off with a single to left centerfield, but was thrown out on her way to second after freshman Becky Anderson reached on a fielder's choice. Junior Emily Miller followed Anderson and singled to rightfield and freshman Shaniqua Steele tallied Mason's final hit with a bunt single.
The Colonials lone run was scored in the top of the first as junior Chrysanthi Halkiotis led things off with a single to rightfield and crossed homeplate after senior Elana Meyers connected on a single to earn an RBI.
Sophomore hurler Rachel Hastings started things off for the Patriots in the circle and gave up one earned run off of five hits, while walking one and striking out two of the 25 batters she faced in 6.1 innings of work. Anderson faced the final two batters, all of which were groundouts. Freshman Amanda Gabriel earned the win for GWU as she only allowed three hits and struckout five Patriots in five innings.
In the first inning of the second contest, sophomore Julia Pillow walked and scored after Miller connected on a single up the middle. In the next inning, sophomore Vickie Brill walked and Steele came in to pinch run for Brill. Sophomore Rachel Hastings hit a sacrifice fly to bring Steele to third and Steele then scored on a passed ball to put Mason up, 2-0. In the third, sophomore Alison Bryan led things off as she cranked a double to leftfield and scored after Miller hit a sacrifice fly to leftfield.
In the top of the sixth, the Colonials scored their lone run as junior Jackie Yaniga reached on a single and scored after junior Lisa Cohen singled to rightfield.
Sophomore Paige Krystofinski pitched 5.2 innings for Mason and gave up one earned run off of seven hits, while walking one and striking out one. Junior Arielle Weinkofsky came in to relieve Krystofinski in the middle of the sixth and ended up striking out one of the four batters she faced. Katie Miller earned the loss for the Colonials as she allowed three runs, two earned, off of five hits.
The Patriots will return action on March 31 with a doubleheader at Hofstra, beginning at 12 p.m.
