The George Mason women's lacrosse team (5-3) got off to a rough start against the George Washington Colonials (3-4) on Wednesday afternoon at Mount Vernon Field, facing an early deficit of 5-2 before scoring four of the final five goals in the first period to pull even at the break. The Patriots used a 6-1 run to start the second period to pull away and held on for a 14-11 victory.
Freshman Taylor Donohue and junior Katelyn Honeyford combined to score the first five goals of the game for George Washington. Honeyford scored the first two of the game and Donohue scored the next three in staking the Colonials to early first period leads of 4-1 and 5-2. After Donohue scored her third goal of the game with 11:04 remaining in the first period, George Mason's defense held the Colonials' duo scoreless for the remainder of the period and the game. George Washington scored only one more goal in the period, while Mason scored four in the final 9:48 - including two from junior attacker Laura King - to even the score at six heading into the break.
The teams traded goals to begin the second period of action. Freshman attacker Megan Udovich scored a free-position goal 52 seconds into the period to put the Patriots on top, but the Colonials' answered with a free-position goal of their own by junior Kristin Karcsh to even the score at seven. Freshman midfielder Kelly Davis then scored the next two goals of the game as George Mason went on a 5-0 run to take a 12-7 lead with 13:48 remaining. George Washington scored four of the game's final six goals but it wasn't enough as the Patriots held on for the 14-11 win.
King led the Patriots with four goals and added an assist for five points. Senior attacker Melissa Venturi added three goals and an assist for four points. On the defensive side of the field, senior Katie Linnertz anchored a Patriots' defensive unit that caused 14 turnovers in the game. Linnertz tied her career high with five caused turnovers. Maggie Bridges and Jess Shelton both grabbed four ground balls and Megan Bartlett led the team with four draw controls.
Sophomore Roxie Alsruhe replaced starter Sara Longobucco at goalkeeper and earned her first win of the season. She played the final 34:12 of the game and recorded nine saves.
Karcsh led the Colonials with four goals and an assist for five points. Senior Molly Gannon had four caused turnovers and three ground balls in the game.
George Mason opens up its Colonial Athletic Association schedule on Friday, April 6 with a 7 p.m. game against Delaware at George Mason Stadium.
