Tampa, Fla.--In a game that started at 10 a.m. and finished after 6 p.m. because of a rain delay, Mason's softball team (7-11) came up short against Bowling Green by a score of 6-3 in the opening day of the Speedline Invitational on the campus of South Florida.
The Falcons were designated the visiting team and scored five runs in the first inning. Mason was only able to have one Patriot bat before the game was delayed due to thunderstorms.
The contest resumed at 5 p.m. and Mason scored two of its runs in the bottom of the fifth after sophomore Ali Bryan connected on a double. Jill Chen and Shaniqua Steele, who pinchran for Lesley Hassen, scored the two runs for Mason. Chen crossed home plate again after junior Kristin Dickel reached off of an error on BGSU's second baseman.
Junior Arielle Weinkofsky pitched the first five innings for the Patriots and gave up six earned runs, while Paige Krystofinski came in for relief in the remaining two innings.
With the schedule of the invitational rearranged due to weather, Mason will next face Florida International on March 17 at 10 a.m., which is followed with a 12 p.m. meeting with UTC.
