Women's Lacrosse Wins Home Opener Against American, 15-9

FAIRFAX, Va. - Freshman midfielder Kelly Davis' found the back of the net five times to lead George Mason (1-1) past American (1-2), 15-9, in the Patriots' home opener at Robinson Field on Thursday afternoon.

After scoring once in her George Mason debut against Johns Hopkins on Feb. 24, Davis scored five goals to lead all players. She also had a ground ball and two draw controls in the game. Junior attacker Laura King and senior midfielder Melissa Curry also scored multiple goals in the game for the Patriots. King finished with three goals, while Curry chipped in a pair.

George Mason jumped out to a 4-1 lead and never trailed in the game. The Patriots led 6-4 at the break and outscored the Eagles 9-5 in the second period of action.

With the win, Mason improves to 12-1 all-time against American. This meeting was never in doubt as George Mason dominated in every statistical category, taking 30 more shots than American, grabbing 12 more ground balls, gaining four more draw controls and causing 10 more turnovers.

Caithlin Gorman and Lauren Aksionoff both scored two goals to lead American. Under intense pressure all game from the Patriots' attack, goaltender Kristine Vida registered 13 saves.

The game was originally scheduled to be played at George Mason Stadium; however, the field conditions at the stadium due to a recent snowstorm in the Fairfax area necessitated the move. The Patriots hit the road for their next game on Sunday, March 4 against in-state rival Virginia Tech before returning home on Wednesday, March 7 to face third-ranked Georgetown at 7 p.m. at George Mason Stadium.
