Orlando, Fla.--Junior Kristin Dickel smacked a double in the top of the third inning, which drove in two runs to help lead Mason's softball team (1-4) to a 2-1 victory over Alabama State (4-7) in the Patriots' final game of the Central Florida Tournament in Orlando, Fla.
In the third, Mason sophomore Ali Bryan (Midland Park, N.J.) reached first off of an error by Alabama State's Amber Smith and Bryan advanced to second after sophomore Kelsey Mack (Reading, Pa.) connected on a single up the middle. Freshman Becky Anderson (Oakton, Va.) followed with another single, and, with the bases loaded and two outs, Dickel hit a double, which brought home both Bryan and Mack.
Pamela Curry scored Alabama State's lone run in the bottom of the fifth after reaching first off of an error from Mason junior Amanda Bach (Chesapeake, Va.). In the sixth inning, with bases loaded, the Hornets' Cami Cunningham was on first, but never reached second after Bach tagged her for the third out. In the final inning, it was three up and three down for ASU to give the Patriots their first win of the 2007 campaign.
Anderson collected her first collegiate win as she was on the mound the first three innings and only allowed five hits, while striking out one of the 14 batters she faced. Sophomore Paige Krystofinski (Pipersville, Pa.) pitched for 1.2 innings and gave up one run off of one hit, while junior Arielle Weinkofsky (Oakhurst, N.J.) garnered the save. Weinkofsky saw action for 2.1 innings and allowed only two hits, while striking out one of the 10 Hornets she faced.
The Patriots will return to action when they face UMBC on Feb. 28 at 2 p.m. in Mason's first home game of the season.
