Orlando, Fla.--George Mason University's softball team opened up its 2007 campaign Friday afternoon at the Central Florida Tournament in Orlando, Fla. The Patriots were first edged by Villanova, 2-1, and then dropped an 11-0 decision to Boston University.

In the opening game against the Wildcats, Junior Amanda Bach (Chesapeake, Va.) was the lead-off batter for the Patriots, which were designated as the visiting squad, and she connected on a double for Mason in the first inning. Sophomore Kelsey Mack (Reading, Pa.) was third in the line-up and smacked a double to leftfield, which drove Bach home to put the Patriots ahead, 1-0. Mack went 2-for-3 against Villanova as she collected her second hit in the sixth inning.

The Wildcats remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth when Meghan Morese hit a double and was brought home after Jess O'Boyle hit a single down the first base line. O'Boyle then scored after Eryn Teague hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield. Junior Lesley Hassen (Virginia Beach, Va.) got on base after connecting on a single and advanced to second after junior Kristin Dickel (North Wales, Pa.) hit a sacrifice bunt, but the game ended after Paige Miller (So., McLean, Va.) hit a fly ball to rightfield.

Junior Arielle Weinkofsky (Oakhurst, N.J.) pitched the entire game for the Patriots and gave up two runs off of nine hits, while striking out one of the 26 batters she faced. Kat Walsh was in the circle the first four innings for Villanova and gave up one run off of two hits, while striking out six Patriots. Nicci Ward finished the game and allowed only three hits and struck-out four of the 12 batters she faced.

In the second game of the day, freshman Becky Anderson pitched her first collegiate game and gave up 11 runs, nine earned, off of nine hits, while walking five and striking five of the 33 batters she faced. Detwiler was in the circle the entire game for BU and struckout four of the 17 Patriots she faced.

The Patriots will return to action when they face Albany on Feb. 24 at 11 a.m.
