COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
George Mason traveled to nearby College Park, Md. to close out its regular season schedule with a nonconference dual meet against local rival Maryland at Comcast Pavilion on Saturday. The Terrapins proved to be too much for the Patriots on this particular day, winning by a final score of 32-6.
Mason won two matches on Saturday, at 133 and 157 pounds. Redshirt sophomore Will Powars won an 8-4 decision against Maryland's Jeff Oldham at 133 pounds to even his record in dual meet action to 9-9 overall this season. Senior Robert Henry won Mason's only other match of the day, defeating Maryland's Clint Stout by a 6-2 decision at the 157-pound weight class to push his dual match record to 9-4 this year.
With the loss, the Patriots close out the regular season with a 9-10 overall record in dual meets, and a 5-4 mark in CAA action. With today's victory, Maryland earned its 17th win of the season, tying the school record set back in 1990.
With its regular season schedule now over, George Mason will wrestle again on March 2-3 when the Patriots host the CAA Championships at John Linn Memorial Gym. Twenty-three wrestlers will earn berths to the NCAA Division I Championships as a result of their performance at the two-day event.
