The George Mason Swimming and Diving teams have positioned themselves in first and second after the first night of competition at the CAA Swimming and Diving Championship held for the eighth consecutive year at the Aquatics and Fitness Center on the George Mason campus. The women's team currently sits in first place with 111 points, while the men are in second with 64, tied with Old Dominion and just four points behind defending champion UNC Wilmington.
The Mason women divers finished with 47 points, placing three athletes in the top five. Senior Colleen Flack (262.925) and junior Amanda Fielding (234.75) finished second and third behind a CAA record performance from Drexel's Kate Hynes (324.55) in the 3 meter competition. Freshman Charlotte Edwards (216.75) finished in fifth place for the Patriots.
In the two relay events, the women's team finished third in both the 200 yard medley relay and the 800 yard freestyle medley. William and Mary recorded a CAA record performance in the 200 medley finishing with a time of 1:44.00. Mason's team of Rebecca Jimenez, Liz Ouzts, Sarah Bizer and Caitlin Impink finished with a time of 1:45.97, behind second-place finisher UNC Wilmington (1:44.24).
The Tribe women also set a CAA record in the 800 yard freestyle medley relay finishing just ahead of Towson (7:24.48) with a record 7:24.05. The Patriots team of Katie Kelly, Caitlin Impink, Allie Smith and Mallory Pucci finished in 7:33.82.
On the men's side, Mason captured the 800 yard freestyle relay a full three seconds faster than second-place Towson (6:46.14) with a time of 6:43.12. Seniors Tom Koucheravy and Joe Houchin, along with junior Matt Kane and freshman Steven Benecki led the entire swim for the Patriots. The young Mason team of sophomores Ross Redcay and Eric Knight with freshmen Ryan David and Tad Ogren finished in seventh place in the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 1:34.61. UNC Wilmington took first place (1:32.23) followed by James Madison (1:32.24) and Old Dominion (1:33.54).
The four-day event will return tomorrow (Feb. 15) with preliminaries beginning at 10 a.m. and finals will start at 6 p.m.
