A pair of George Mason freshman qualified for the IC4A Championships and set new personal standards at the St. Valentine's Invitational meet, held on Friday at the Track and Tennis Center on the campus of Boston University in Boston, Mass.
Michael Pachella (Ogdensburg, N.J./Wallkill Valley Regional) earned a fourth-place finish in the 1000-meter run, crossing the finish line in 2:26.63, topping the IC4A standard of 2:29.95. The only competitors in the field of 72 to finish with a faster time than Pachella were John Corbit (2:25.41), John Carle (2:26.11) and Ted Towle (2:26.48).
Marcus Wyche (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch) set his personal best in the 400-meter dash, finishing 30th overall with a time of 49.40 seconds, besting the IC4A qualifying mark of 49.50 seconds.
The Patriot tandem of junior Michael Wade and senior Ryan McCoy fared well in the field events. Wade placed in the top-10 in three different events - the high jump, the long jump and the triple jump. He finished sixth in the high jump (1.98 meters/6 ft. 6 in.), eighth in the long jump (6.65 meters/21 ft. 10 in.) and sixth in the triple jump (13.95 meters/45 ft. 9.25 in.). McCoy finished in the top-five in the only event he competed in at the meet, placing fifth in the long jump with a leap of 6.70 meters (21 ft. 11.75 in.).
The St. Valentine's Invitational will continue tomorrow with the women's portion of the competition. The George Mason men's track and field team will compete again next weekend at the Virginia Tech Invitational in Blacksburg, Va.
