LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. -
Freshman Cayle Byers was a Preseason CAA All-Freshman Team selection at 197 pounds in a poll of the conference's head coaches. Byers has lived up to his advanced billing early in the 2007-08 wrestling campaign, posting a 13-1 record in his first 14 matches. The conference rewarded Byers for his efforts on Tuesday, naming him the CAA Co-Rookie of the Week award winner, along with Anwar Goeres of Binghamton.
Included among those 13 wins are a fall and two major decisions. The Chugiak, Alaska native has a perfect 3-0 mark in dual matches and has earned two tournament titles at 197 pounds. He won the championship in his weight class at The Citadel Open and the Navy Classic. Byers finished as the runner-up at the Pembroke Classic, where he lost his lone match of the season, a close 3-2 decision in the championship bout to Dan Tulley.
Also earning weekly awards from the conference were Hofstra's Charles Griffin and Drexel's Ryan Hluschak. Griffin and Hluschak shared CAA Wrestler of the Week honors.
The George Mason wrestling team's 2007-08 campaign continues with the team scheduled to host a tri-meet with both Drexel and American on Friday, Dec. 7 at the Fieldhouse. The wrestling action is slated to begin at 4 p.m. when the Patriots take on the Dragons in a Colonial Athletic Association dual.
