George Mason seniors Sarah Bizer and Will Thomas each had terrific months in November as the pair were named George Mason Female and Male Student-Athletes of the Month.
Bizer, a member of the women's swimming and diving team, had a record-breaking November, as she set a new Mason record in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.43 at the Patriot Invitational. The time was also a meet record, one of three she set on the weekend. Her time of 51.60 in the 100-yard freestyle as well as the 400-yard freestyle relay team she anchored (3:28.39) also represented new best times for Mason's signature meet.
Competing in the U.S. Short Course National Championships in Atlanta, Bizer swam career-best times of 51.19 in the 100-yard freestyle and 56.72 in the 100-yard butterfly. The Annandale, Va., native has bested her previous career mark in three events just one month into her senior season.
Thomas, a member of the men's basketball team, was critical to Mason getting off to the best start in school history as Mason went 4-0 to open the year and finished November with a 6-1 record. The Patriots beat No. 18 Kansas State in that stretch and Mason's only loss came to No. 20 Villanova.
Thomas averaged 16.7 points, 10.9 rebounds and 2.0 assists in the month while averaging 34 minutes and shooting 59.7 percent from the field and 71.4 percent from the free throw line. He's among the top 20 in Mason history in points, top 15 in blocks and top 10 in rebounding. Thomas was twice named CAA Player of the Week in November, earning the honor in back-to-back weeks.
Previous winners of thus year's George Mason Athlete of the Month were Jaqueline Kohler (Sept., women's volleyball), Fro Adu (Sept., men's soccer), Kelly Keelan (Oct., women's soccer) and Robert Krause (Oct., men's cross country).
