NORFOLK, Va. - George Mason finished fourth at the Virginia Intercollegiate State Wrestling Championships, held on Saturday at Granby High School in Norfolk, Va. The Patriots finished with 114 team points.
Old Dominion won the tournament with 196 points, followed by the University of Virginia (179) and Liberty (116). VMI (95.5), James Madison (48) and The Apprentice School (17) all finished behind Mason.
The Patriots had a total of 11 place winners at the tournament, including three runners-up, one third-place, two fourth-place, one fifth-place and four sixth-place wrestlers. The runners-up included redshirt sophomore Tyler Tisdell, who lost a close 3-2 decision to ODU's Nick Pullano in the championship bout at the 165-pound weight class, junior Randy Oates, who dropped a 6-4 decision to Virginia's Mike Grogran in the championship bout at 174 pounds, and redshirt junior Harry Zander, who was pinned by ODU's David Mendoza in 3:30 in the 197-pound championship match.
In addition to the three runners-up, eight other Patriots placed at the tournament. At 125 pounds, junior Joe Coughlin finished fourth and teammate Brian Wright finished fifth. In the 133-pound bracket, redshirt sophomore Will Powars finished sixth. Like Powars, Robert Henry also finished sixth, but at the 157-pound weight class. Two more Mason wrestlers finished sixth - freshman Bill Widener at 174 pounds and senior Jim Martin at 184 pounds. Junior Matt Moyer finished fourth at 184 pounds, while senior Ryan Kittrick wrestled to a third-place finish at the heavyweight class.
George Mason will wrestle again on Wednesday, Jan. 10 at 7:30 p.m. against VMI in Lexington, Va.
