Women's Team Defeats George Washington; Men's Squad Edged by the Colonials

Fairfax, Va.--George Mason University's women's swimming & diving team claimed a 139-96 victory over George Washington on Jan. 21 at the Charles E. Smith Athletic Center in Washington, D.C., while the men's team was edged by the Colonials, 116-112.

On the women's side, Mason won nine of the 16 events against GWU. Mallory Pucci claimed two titles in the 1,000 free (10:42.88) and the 100 fly (59.45) to add 19 points to the Patriots' total team score. Katie Kelly placed first in the 200 free in a time of 1:58.55, as well as the 100 breast (1:08.44) as she edged out Ariana Berdini by .08 seconds. Colleen Flack also finished first in both the 1-meter diving event (259.20) and the 3-meter event (269.70).

Mason's men's squad was leading by a score of 108-105 heading into the final event of the afternoon, the 200-yard freestyle relay. The Patriots team consisted of Eric Knight, Joe Houchin, B.J. Dufresne and Matt Elko, which finished in a time of 1:27.31, just :00.30 seconds behind the Colonials, who placed first and ended the dual meet with a 116-112 win.

Houchin won two events for the Patriots in the 1,000 free (9:43.50) and the 100 fly (52.05). Ryan Metzker, who was named CAA Male Diver of the Week last Wednesday, claimed the 1-meter diving event with a score of 262.72, as well as the 3-meter (279.60).

Mason will return to action when the Patriots host Mary Washington on Jan. 26 at 6 p.m.
