George Mason took a short road trip to Washington, D.C. to wrestle the American Eagles at Bender Arena on Sunday afternoon. The Patriots won matches at four different weight classes but fell to the Eagles by seven points, 24-17.
Mason got off to a strong start at the meet, winning three of the first five matches. Freshman Brian Wright started the meet off with a 5-4 decision against Jasen Borshoff at 125 pounds to put Mason on top early by three points. The Patriots also scored victories at 141 pounds and 157 pounds as freshman Mostafa Ibrahim earned a 9-5 decision at 141 pounds and senior Robert Henry won by technical fall at 157 pounds.
The final five matches weren't nearly as successful for the Patriots; however, as the team managed only one win in the last five matches. Mason took its last lead of the meet when junior Matt Moyer pinned Dwayne Hash in 4:52 at 184 pounds. Leading 17-15, the Patriots dropped the final two matches to fall 24-17.
George Mason returns to action on Friday, Jan. 19 when it hosts the CAA Duals at the George Mason Fieldhouse. The event will span two days with the Patriots wrestling Rider and Sacred Heart on Friday and Wagner, Hofstra and Boston University on Saturday.
