SUNSET BEACH, N.C. - The George Mason golf team struggled in first round action today at the Sea Trail Intercollegiate and currently stand in 16th out of 18 teams. The second round of the 36-hole event at the par 72, 6,761 yard, Rees Jones Golf Course will be held on Sunday morning.
James Madison posted a 284 for a two-stroke lead over Western Carolina. Loyola and Guilford are tied for third with 289 and Gardner-Webb rounds out the top-five with a score of 291.
Senior Nick DeSimone is the only Patriot in the top 20, finishing in a tie for 11th after shooting a one-under par 71 (36-35=71). Dan Hurley carded a 39-37=76 to stand in 57th place. One stroke behind Hurley are Mason's J.J. Amoruso and Justin Wingo.
Matt Cook of Western Carolina and Kris Shepherd of Kennesaw State each shot a five-under 67 to lead the tournament. Guilford's Colin Clark and Stetson's David McAndrew sit in a tie for third with a score of 69 while six players shot a 70 to tie for fifth.
