HARRISONBURG, Va. - The Colonial Athletic Association announced its All-CAA and All-Rookie Teams for women's lacrosse as selected by a vote of the league's coaches at the pre-championship banquet, held on Thursday night in Harrisonburg, Va. on the eve of the 2006 CAA Women's Lacrosse Championships hosted by top-seeded James Madison. Four George Mason athletes received recognition from the CAA for their outstanding play this season.
Senior defender Michele Brady, junior midfielder Melissa Curry and sophomore attacker Laura King all earned Second-Team All-CAA honors. Freshman attacker Brittany Berger made the CAA All-Rookie Team.
Brady, a native of Fairfax, Va., closes out her career at George Mason with her third consecutive selection to the All-CAA team. The anchor of Mason's defensive unit, Brady started 15 games during the 2006 campaign, ranking third on the team with 19 caused turnovers and fourth with 32 ground balls. She ranks fourth all-time at Mason in caused turnovers with 95 in her career.
An outstanding all-around player, Curry was named to the first All-CAA team of her career after ranking fourth in the conference in ground balls per game with an average of 3.07 per contest and third in free-position goals per game with an average of 0.60 per game. In 15 starts this season, she tallied 17 goals and seven assists for 24 points, to go along with 23 caused turnovers, 46 ground balls and 24 draw controls. She ranked first on the team in caused turnovers and ground balls, second in draw controls, tied for third in goals and fourth in points and assists. The native of Edgewater, Md. ranks sixth all-time at Mason with 84 caused turnovers in her career.
A CAA All-Rookie and All-Tournament Team selection last season, King led the Patriot attack during her sophomore season with a team-high 48 goals and 56 points. She also led the team in shooting percentage (.565), game-winning goals (4) and draw controls (26), while ranking second on the team in caused turnovers (20) and third in assists (8). The Springfield, Pa. native tied for first in the CAA in game-winning goals, was third in the conference in goals per game with an average of three per contest and tied for eighth in points per game with an average of 3.50 per game. She etched her name in the Patriot record books throughout her stellar sophomore campaign. Her six goals against Old Dominion on April 9 tied her for the eighth-best single-game goal-scoring performance at Mason, while the eight points she tallied on that afternoon tied her for the third-highest single-game total in Mason history. Her five caused turnovers against James Madison on April 21 tied her for the sixth-best single-game mark of all-time. The 48 goals she scored this season is the fifth-highest total in a single-season in program history and she tied for the seventh-highest single-season point total with 56. After only two years, King already ranks among the career leaders in goals and points at George Mason. She is sixth all-time with 73 goals and tied for 10th with 82 points.
Berger, from White Hall, Md., started 15 games during her first season with the Patriots and immediately made an impact, scoring 17 goals and adding 10 assists for 27 points. She ranked second on the team in assists and third in goals and points. The freshman earned CAA Rookie of the Week honors on April 4.
