Hofstra Takes Two From Mason Softball

Fairfax, Va.--George Mason Unviersity's softball team had a 3-2 lead against Hofstra, but could not hold on and fell to the Pride by a score of 7-4 in the first game of a Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader Sunday afternoon at George Mason Field. In the second contest, Hofstra (22-9, 7-1 CAA) claimed a 21-0 victory over Mason (1-37, 1-7).

In the first game, three of Mason's runs were scored in the third inning as sophomore Lesley Hassen reached first after connecting for a single and freshman Meghan Hill came in to pinch run. Sophomore Kyle Noro was up next and reached on a catcher's interference, while sophomore Cassi Bailey made it to first from a fielder's choice. Hill was the first to score and after sophomore Emily Miller hit a single and advanced to second on the throw, both Noro and Bailey scored.

With the bases loaded, Hofstra's Pam Dreslinski smacked one over the fence to push the Pride ahead of the Patriots in the top of the sixth inning. Mason sophomore Katlyn Winter hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the seventh to pull the Patriots within three, but Mason could not get any closer.

Sophomore Arielle Weinkofsky pitched the entire game for Mason and gave up seven runs off of 12 hits, while walking two and striking out eight of the 37 batters she faced. Kayleigh Lotti earned the win for HU as she gave up four runs, one earned, off of four hits, while striking out 10 Patriots.

In the second contest, Mason connected on one hit as sophomore Mandy Bach was 1-for-2 at the plate. Hofstra hit five homeruns in the second game and Lisa Wambold was 3-for-4 at the plate, earned six RBI and scored three runs for the Pride.

Mason freshmen Rachel Hastings and Ali Bryan split the pitching duties and Hastings ended up with the loss as she began the game on the mound for Mason. Hastings gave up nine runs, seven earned, off of 10 hits, while walking one and striking out one. Hofstra's Courtney Oliver collected the win as she pitched three innings and walked one and struckout three of the 10 Patriots she faced.

The Patriots will return to action when they face Maryland in College Park, Md. on April 12 for a doubleheader, beginning at 5 p.m.
