AUSTIN, Texas - Senior Richard Phillips won the finals of the 110-meter hurdles at the Texas Relays on Saturday, finishing the race in 13.71 seconds, topping his time of 13.82 seconds that he ran during yesterday's preliminary heats.
Phillips beat Linnie Yarbrough of Middle Tennessee State, who finished in 13.73 seconds, and Ty Akins of Auburn, who crossed the finish line in 13.76 seconds. Phillips' time is a new high mark for the senior during this year's outdoor season. He has already qualified for the NCAA East Regional Championships in the event.
Senior Marc Kellman competed in the triple jump for the first time since finishing second at the NCAA Championships during the indoor season. He picked up right where he left off, placing second in the event in Texas with a leap of 16.05 meters (52 ft. 8 in.). The only person to jump farther than Kellman was Florida State's Rafeeq Curry, who recorded a mark of 16.44 meters (53 ft. 11.25 in.). Junior Ryan McCoy also competed in the event, finishing ninth with a leap of 15.45 meters (50 ft. 8.25 in.). Kellman's mark qualifies the senior for the NCAA East Regional Championships, while McCoy already qualified for the championships last weekend at the Mason Spring Open Invitational.
Quentin Matthews also qualified for championship competition at the meet, qualifying for the IC4A Championships in the high jump with a mark of 2.05 meters (6 ft. 8.75 in.).
The women's team competed in the 4x200-meter relay on Saturday, finishing in eighth place with a time of 1:39.02. The team included freshman Ryann Hendricks, freshman Murielle Ahoure, freshman Brittanie Williams and senior Sheena Davidson.
The women also competed at the Delaware Invitational in Newark, Del. on Saturday. Sophomore Alicia York finished 12th in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:29.22, while freshman Stephanie Gunter ran a time of 5:09.66 in the 1500 meter run, good for ninth place in the event. Senior Ashley Ackerley finished third in the discus throw (32.81 meters) and fifth in the hammer throw (39.32 meters).
The men's team will compete again on Saturday, April 15 at the Lou Onesty/Milton G. Abramson Invitational in Charlottesville, Va., while the women are not scheduled to compete next weekend.
