AUSTIN, Texas - Senior Richard Phillips finished the 110-meter hurdles in 13.82 seconds, winning his preliminary heat and giving the former Olympian the fastest time out of the 62 athletes that competed in the event at the Texas Relays, held at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas.
Phillips already qualified for the NCAA East Regional Championships last weekend at the Mason Spring Open Invitational with a time of 14.10 seconds. Friday's time was his fastest of the outdoor season. Phillips will run in tomorrow's 110-meter hurdles finals, slated to begin at 2:45 p.m. In addition to Phillips, another Mason athlete excelled in the event. While sophomore Brian Hay didn't qualify for the finals, he did qualify for the IC4A Championships with a time of 14.38 seconds.
Freshman Ryann Hendricks had a stellar afternoon for the women's team, qualifying for the ECAC Championships in the triple jump with a leap of 11.87 meters (38 ft. 11.5 in.). The native of Chicago, Ill. also ran on Mason's 4x400-meter relay team that qualified for the ECAC Championships, crossing the finish line in 3:48.77. Freshman Murielle Ahoure, senior Sheena Davidson and sophomore Misti Turner rounded out the relay team.
In the 100-meter dash, Ahoure won her preliminary heat, crossing the finish line in 11.70 seconds. The time placed her 14th in a deep field of 90 athletes entered in the event.
