Fairfax, Va.--George Mason University's softball team closed out its 2006 home season with a 5-4 loss against UNC Wilmington Sunday afternoon at George Mason Field in Colonial Athletic Association action. With this loss, the Patriots now own an overall record of 8-45 (5-12 CAA), while the Seahawks improve to 31-24 (12-6) on the season.
In the bottom of the third, Mason sophomore rightfielder Katlyn Winter (Mentor, Ohio) was walked and advanced to third after freshman leftfielder Dee Murray (Culpeper, Va.) smacked a double to left centerfield. Sophomore second baseman Amanda Bach (Chesapeake, Va.) also walked and sophomore Emily Miller (Springfield, Va.) then reached on a fielder's choice as Winter was tagged out on her way to home plate. Freshman shortstop Kelsey Mack (Reading, Pa.) then connected on her 43rd hit of the season and earned two RBI as both Murray and Bach scored. Sophomore first baseman Kristen Dickel (North Wales, Pa.) then hit her fifth double of the season and sent both Miller and Mack across home plate.
The Seahawks pulled within two after freshman catcher Carley Hughes and freshman Allison Mashburn each scored in the top of the fourth inning. Freshman rightfielder Brittany Wilkins and senior second baseman Hayley House each scored a run in the top of the sixth to tie the game as both House and sophomore centerfielder Meghan Murray each earned an RBI. With the scored knotted at four, Hughes connected on her second homerun of the day for the winning run.
Sophomore Arielle Weinkofsky (Oakhurst, N.J.) started out on the mound for the Patriots and gave up two earned runs off of seven hits, while striking out one of the 21 batters. Freshman Rachel Hastings (Westborough, Mass.) relieved Weinkofsky in the fifth and was accredited the loss as she gave up three runs off of four hits. Senior Jennifer Bosley pitched all seven innings and gave up four earned runs off of seven hits, while striking out 11 and walking three of the 29 Patriots she faced.
Mason wraps-up its 2006 regular season this weekend as the Patriots travel to Atlanta, Ga. to compete against Georgia State. The two teams will square-off in a doubleheader on May 6 (2 p.m.) and will wrap-up the three game series the following day at noon.
