Robby Jacobsen seemed to be at the heart of every Mason rally on Sunday and starter Dan Jaycox was able to shut down every Hofstra threat as the Patriots completed a sweep of Hofstra, downing the Pride 5-3 in Colonial Athletic Association baseball action. The game was Mason's 500th at Spuhler Field and the Patriots won their 335th contest at the 21-year-old facility. In the process, Mason also clinched a winning season at home for the 20th time at Spuhler Field.
Jacobsen was 3 for 4 with three RBI on the day, with a single and two doubles. He also scored a run as he moved into the top-10 all-time at Mason in RBI. He's already in the top 10 in hits, runs, at-bats, doubles, home runs, steals and total bases. Jason Bour and Matt York also had RBI for Mason while Jaycox (3-3) went eight innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with three walks and six strikeouts. On the season, he has 56 strikeouts and just 14 walks in 57 innings. Freshman Jordan Flasher pitched the ninth for his third save of the season.
Mason's first run came in the second when the Patriots got a leadoff double from Scott Krieger and he later scored from third on a Jason Bour two-bagger. Hofstra took its second lead of the series in the fourth. Matt Kougasian led off with a walk and a single by Ricky Caputo put runners on second and third. Each advanced on a ground out by Steve Oliveri and Kougasian scored on Michael Walsh' squeeze bunt. The Pride took a 2-1 lead when Caputo raced home on a wild pitch.
Hofstra added a run in the fifth when Nick Panzarella and Chris Mentrasti had back-to-back one-out singles and Kougasian's two-out dribbler up the middle scored Pannzarella. Mason retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Tyler Youngs and Spencer Wiggins were each hit by a pitch and the pair scored on Robby Jacobsen's double to left-centerfield. Matt York's single up the middle brought home Jacobsen for a 4-3 lead.
In the seventh, Brent Weiss drew a one-out walk, Wiggins singled to right to put runners on first and second, and Jacobsen hit a run-scoring double down the leftfield line to make it 5-3 and chase reliever Brody Fontaine. Jeff Denlea came on in relief and retired the Patriots without any further damage.
Patrick Rogers (1-3) took the loss after giving up four earned runs on five hits in five innings. He did not walk a batter and he struck out two. Brody Fontaine last one and one-third innings in relief, giving up one run on two hits and a walk. Denlea pitched the final one and two-third innings, allowing just one hit.
