NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (April 20, 2006) - The George Mason women's tennis team seeded #9 defeated #8 Towson, 4-1 in the opening match of the 2006 CAA Women's Tennis Championship today at Huntington Park Tennis Center in Newport News, Va.
Mason jumped out to a 1-0 lead after taking two of the three doubles matches and one point. The Patriot's top team of Andreea Fusea and Maricel Ballester won a tough match in the tie-breaker set, 9-8(7-4) and Jenn Dektas and Julia Moscato defeated the team of Boumila Patzer and Evenlyn Izaguirre, 8-4, at No. 2 doubles.
The Patriots gained points in three singles matches and lost one match for the final score. Fusea defeated Patzer, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, while Ballester finished off her opponent 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Julie Moscato was also victorious for the Patriots as she recorded a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles. Both Jenn Dektas and Alicia Van Zandt were leading their matches when the Patriots won.
