Phillips and Williams Both Qualify for Championships in Two Events on Saturday

FAIRFAX, Va. - George Mason's men's and women's track and field teams hosted the Mason Spring Open Invitational, their first home meet of the outdoor track and field season, on Saturday at George Mason Stadium, with both teams qualifying a number of athletes for championship competition at the meet.

Senior Richard Phillips qualified for championship competition in two events, the 200-meter dash and the 110-meter hurdles. Phillips finished first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.66 seconds, which qualifies him for the IC4A Championships. In the 110-meter hurdles, Phillips qualified for the NCAA East Regional Championships, winning the finals with a time of 14.30 seconds. The next closest competitor, Howard's Jacoby DuBose, finished in 14.64 seconds. Phillips ran his fastest time of the day in his preliminary heat, finishing in 14.10 seconds.

Senior Sammy Sesay finished in first place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.81 seconds, edging Jonathan Watkins of Northeastern at the finish line by .01 of a second. The time qualifies Sesay for the IC4A Championships in the event.

In the field events, both Ryan McCoy and Quentin Matthews finished first in their respective events. McCoy qualified for the NCAA East Regional Championships with a leap of 15.53 meters, topping the qualifying mark of 15.08 meters. Matthews finished first in the high jump with a mark of 1.95 meters.

The men's 4x100-meter relay team of Marc Kellman, Phillips, Sesay and Andres Maldonado finished in first place with a time of 42.61 seconds, narrowly edging out Howard University's team of DuBose, Daniel Kinney, Dante Buckner and Dennis Washington.

On the women's side, freshman Brittanie Williams had a stellar day at the meet, qualifying for the ECAC Championships in both the 100-meter hurdles and the triple jump. Williams ran a time of 14.40 seconds in the preliminary heats of the 100-meter hurdles, topping the ECAC qualifying mark of 14.44 seconds. She finished in second place in the finals of the event, behind Tremaine Shaw of Northeastern. In the triple jump, Williams finished first with a leap of 12.10 meters. The next closest competitor, Molly Jones of Princeton, recorded a mark of 11.74 meters.

Fifth-year senior Sheena Davidson finished in third place in the 400-meter dash, crossing the finish line in 55.90 seconds. The time qualifies Davidson for the ECAC Championships, scheduled for May 12-14 in Princeton, N.J.

Freshman Murielle Ahoure finished first in the 100-meter dash, finishing in 11.65 seconds, .03 of a second faster than the second-place finisher, Jordine Kimbrel of Northeastern. Ahoure has already qualified for the NCAA East Regional Championships in the event with a time of 11.55 seconds at the Hurricane Invitational on March 18.

The women's 4x100-meter relay team of Misti Turner, Davidson, Ryann Hendricks and Ahoure ran their fastest time of the season, finishing in first place with a time of 46.31 seconds, topping their previous high of 46.72 seconds. The 4x400-meter relay team of Jonecia Gates, Melissa Ferry, Williams and Stephanie Gunter finished third with a time of 3:59.23.

Both the men's and women's teams will compete at the Texas Relays in Austin, Texas next weekend. The first day of competition begins on Thursday, April 6.
