RICHMOND, Va. - Junior Ryan McCoy was named the Colonial Athletic Association Men's Field Athlete of the Week for his impressive performance in the triple jump at the Lou Onesty/Milton G. Abramson Invitational in Charlottesville, Va. on Saturday. This marks the second consecutive week that a member of George Mason's track and field team has received the honor. Senior Marc Kellman won the award last week.
McCoy finished first in the triple jump at the meet. His jump of 15.81 meters (51 ft. 10.5 in.) tops his old personal best of 15.53 meters set earlier in the season at Mason's Spring Open Invitational on April 1. The next closest competitor, Hampton's Brandon Jones, recorded a mark of 14.78 meters. McCoy has already qualified for the NCAA East Regional Championships in the event. His jump is the eighth-best mark in the nation this season, and fifth best in the East Region.
The jump is second among the CAA leaders in the event heading into this week's CAA Track and Field Championships, held on April 21 and 22 in Richmond, Va. The championships begin on Friday at 11 a.m. with the men's javelin. The decathlon and heptathlon start at noon.
