Fairfax, Va.--Mason's softball team claimed its largest margin of victory of the 2006 campaign as the Patriots (4-41) defeated Georgetown by a score of 5-0 in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at George Mason Field. The Hoyas (2-20) won the opening contest, 3-0.
Mason started off the scoring in the first inning of the second game as freshman Dee Murray (Culpeper, Va.) connected for a single and reached third after sophomore Emily Miller (Springfield, Va.) smacked a double to leftfield. With two runners on and only one out, freshman Kelsey Mack (Reading, Pa.) collected her 38th hit to earn two RBI, but was thrown out at second.
Lead-off hitter, sophomore Cassi Bailey (Chesapeake, Va.), was successful on her bunt attempt and reached first in the top of the third. Miller was the third batter in the lineup and hit her second double of the game, advanced to third on the throw and went all the way home on an error by Georgetown junior thirdbaseman Lacey Campbell.
The Patriots' final run came in the fifth as freshman Meghan Hill (Falls Church, Va.) connected on a single and was brought home by Murray as she hit a double to centerfield to earn an RBI.
Mason freshman Ali Bryan (Midland Park, N.J.) earned her first collegiate win as she only allowed five hits, while walking one and striking out four of the 25 Hoyas she faced. Sophomore Anna Wheatley pitched the entire game for GU and gave up five runs, four earned, off of nine hits and she did not walk or strike out any Patriots.
Mason had three hits in the first game and kept the Hoyas scoreless until the seventh inning. GU added to its hit total with four and scored three runs in the middle of the lineup to help capture the win. Freshman Rachel Hastings (Westborough, Mass.) was on the mound for the Patriots the entire game and gave up three earned runs off of seven hits, while walking two and striking out one of the 25 batters she faced. Freshman Courtney Clark earned the win for GU as she only allowed three hits and struck out one of 23 Patriots.
Mason returns to the road and will next compete against Towson in Maryland, with the first game of a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. on April 22.
