HARRISONBURG, Va. - Kelsey Mack went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs, including a two run double in the top of the sixth inning to lift George Mason past the James Madison softball team by a score of 8-4 Saturday afternoon at the JMU Softball Complex.
The Dukes jumped on the board first in the bottom of the third inning on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Jenn Chavez (Upland, Calif./Upland) and a Patriot error to take a 2-0 lead. JMU (17-22, 4-8) then added two more runs in the home half of the fifth thanks to an RBI double off the bat of senior Kelly Berkemeier (Dallas, Texas/Greenhill) scoring pinch runner Krista Landing (Eureka, Calif./St. Bernard). Freshman pitcher Meredith Felts (Greenville, N.C./J.H. Rose) also added an RBI single for the Dukes before George Mason pitcher Rachel Hastings got a pop up to end the inning.
In the top of the sixth the game began to fall apart for JMU as four costly errors allowed the Patriots to put six runs across to take a 6-4 lead. Katlyn Winter, and Cassi Bailey each had an RBI single for George Mason (3-40, 3-8) in the inning with the big blow coming off the bat of Kelsey Mack who drove in Dee Murray and pinch runner Meghan Hill with an RBI double.
George Mason tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh on an RBI double by Lesley Hassen and a wild pitch to increase its lead to 8-4.
Hastings (2-8) allowed a walk and a single in the bottom of the seventh before getting the last three outs to seal the win for the Patriots.
Next up for Mason is a non-conference doubleheader against Georgetown at George Mason Field on April 19, with the first game beginning at 3 p.m.
