NEWARK, Del. - George Mason (7-6, 3-2 CAA) dropped a heartbreaking Colonial Athletic Association women's lacrosse game against Delaware (5-9, 1-5 CAA) by a single goal on Friday evening. The Fighting Blue Hens scored the final five goals of the game to win their first conference game of the season.
Trailing 5-4 at the half, the Patriots scored the first five goals of the second period to take a 9-5 lead with 15:01 remaining in the game. Sophomore attacker Laura King started the scoring spurt with a free-position goal at 25:08 to tie the score at five. Mason took the lead when junior Jess Shelton found the back of the net at the 20:57 mark. Starting with junior Melissa Curry's free-position goal with 16:35 remaining, the Patriots scored three goals in the span of 1:34 to take a four-goal lead.
Mason was unable to score again; however, and the Delaware attack began to chip away at the Patriots lead. Freshman attacker Lindyn Soviero started the comeback with a goal at the 13:04 mark. Katie Muth scored 2:07 later to pull the Fighting Blue Hens within two at 9-7. Delaware then scored three more times in two minutes to take the lead. Senior attacker Megan Hager scored on a free-position goal with 6:01 left in the game to pull the Fighting Blue Hens within a goal, Soviero scored her third and final goal of the game to tie the score at nine, and Debbie Sloan scored the game-winner with 4:01 remaining to give Delaware its first lead in more than 21 minutes.
The Fighting Blue Hens gained possession and attempted to run out the clock. The Patriots had one final chance to tie the game, regaining possession with less than 30 seconds remaining and pushing the ball down the field. Freshman Brittany Berger fired off a shot with 19 seconds on the clock that was saved by freshman goalie Jessica Cerveny.
Berger, King and Shelton all had two goals in the game, while Berger added two assists. Soviero and Muth both had three goals for Delaware. The Patriots held a 26-22 ground ball advantage and caused 17 turnovers in the game. Senior Michele Brady led Mason's defense with three caused turnovers. She also scooped up four ground balls. Freshman goalkeeper Roxie Alsruhe tallied 13 saves in the game.
George Mason travels to Towson on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. Colonial Athletic Association matchup. Towson is 3-3 in conference play this season, having lost its last game on Friday against James Madison 12-10.
