HARRISONBURG, Va. - In game two, George Mason put a run on the board in the top of the first and then scored the eventual winning run in the top of the third on an RBI ground out by Emily Miller as the Patriots split a doubleheader with Colonial Athletic Association foe James Madison, winning the second game 2-1, but dropping the first game 3-2.
JMU (17-21, 4-7) was held to two hits through six innings in game one thanks to George Mason starting pitcher Arielle Weinkofsky. Weinkofsky allowed only three hits through six innings and went to the circle in the bottom of the seventh with a 2-0 lead.
Kelsey Mack went 2-for-3 with a run scored for GMU (2-40, 2-8).
Senior Briana Carrera (San Diego, Calif./Bonita Vista) got the Dukes started in the seventh inning with a single to left. Freshman Meredith Felts (Greenville, N.C./J.H. Rose) then followed Carrera with a double down the left-field line to score pinch runner Andrea Long (Laury's Station, Pa./Parkland) to cut the George Mason lead to 2-1. Senior Kelly Berkemeier (Dallas, Texas/Greenhill) then came off the bench for the Dukes and delivered a single through the left side of the infield, scoring pinch runner Krista Landing (Eureka, Calif./St. Bernard) to tie the game at two.
After two costly Patriot errors loaded the bases, Chavez and the Dukes took advantage as the second baseman laced the Weinkofsky (1-16) offering past a diving Kristin Dickel at first base to drive in the winning run.
Felts (9-7) went the distance for the Dukes, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out eight to pick up the win.
In game two both teams were again led by a strong effort from their starting pitcher. Freshman Jenny Clohan (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) pitched a complete game for the Dukes, allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits while striking out seven, but her counterpart Rachel Hastings (1-8) also pitched a complete game, scattering two hits while allowing only one unearned run in the bottom of the second to pick the win.
George Mason put a run on the board in the top of the first and then scored the eventual winning run in the top of the third on an RBI ground out by Emily Miller.
Miller finished the day 1-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI.
Freshman catcher Julia Dominguez (Sterling, Va./Park View) went 1-for-3 with a run scored for the Dukes.
JMU will look to rebound tomorrow as they host George Mason for the third and final game of the series. Game time is scheduled for noon.
