FAIRFAX, Va. - Junior Melissa Venturi netted four goals to lead the Patriots to their second consecutive victory at George Mason Stadium on Wednesday against George Washington. With the 11-9 win, Mason improves to 2-1 on the season, while the Colonials fall to 1-3.
Venturi was on fire in the first period, scoring three of her four goals. The Sewell, N.J. native's next goal came off of a free position shot with 4:59 remaining in the second period and the score tied at nine. Sophomore Alex Velesz sealed the victory when her shot found the back of the net with 1:36 left in the game.
Junior attacker Laura Hostetler led George Washington with four goals. However, the George Mason defense was able to hold Hostetler and the rest of the Colonial attack scoreless for the final 7:50 of the game. Junior Katie Linnertz led the Patriots with three caused turnovers, while senior Michele Brady caused one turnover and scooped up two ground balls. The Patriots' defensive unit caused a total of eight turnovers in the game.
Freshman goaltender Roxie Alsruhe earned the win to improve to 2-1 on the season. Alsruhe recorded nine saves in the contest. Sophomore Caitlin Garman had a game-high 14 saves in a losing effort for the Colonials.
George Mason will attempt to earn its third consecutive win when it faces Holy Cross on March 16 at 3:30 p.m. in Worcester, Mass.
