PHILADELPHIA - George Mason's wrestling team is tied with Wagner for sixth place with a team score of 5.0 points after the first day of action at the CAA Championships, held at Drexel University's John A. Daskalakis Athletic Center in Philadelphia, Pa.
Hofstra leads the team scoring with 30.5 points with Drexel in second with 24.5 points. ODU (24.0), Rider (23.5) and Sacred Heart (12.0) are all ahead of Mason in the standings, with Binghamton (4.0), Boston University (3.0), JMU (2.0) and Campbell (0.0) trailing the Patriots.
Redshirt freshman Tyler Tisdell is still alive for the title at 165 pounds having defeated Nick Magaraci of Wagner by major decision. Tisdell will wrestle ODU's Robby Gosnell in his first match tomorrow. Matt Moyer is also in the running for the championship at 184 pounds after defeating Brian Lambert of JMU 16-9. Moyer will wrestle Joe Maroney of Rider in his first match tomorrow.
Sophomore Joe Coughlin went 1-1 on the day at 125 pounds, losing to ODU's Bryan LaShomb and defeating Trevour Smith of Campbell by major decision 10-1 in the consolation bracket. Coughlin will wrestle Mike Rooney of Wagner tomorrow in the consolation bracket.
At 133 pounds, redshirt freshman Will Powars lost his only match of the day against Ryan Williams of ODU due to injury at the 6:13 mark in the match. Powars will wrestle tomorrow, injury permitting, against Boston University's Bryan Matsura in the consolation bracket.
Junior Robert Henry dropped a decision to Nate Patterson of Binghamton to fall to the consolation bracket at 149 pounds. Henry will wrestle Jeff Jacobs of JMU in his first match tomorrow.
Randy Oates lost his only match of the day at 174 pounds to fall to the consolation bracket. He'll wrestle Nick Dalicandro of Sacred Heart in his first match tomorrow. Senior Joel Caruso also lost his only match of the day to Jon Oplinger of Drexel 10-8 in overtime at 197 pounds. Caruso will face JMU's James Bartley in the consolation bracket tomorrow.
Freshman Chris Cartella dropped both of his matches at 141 pounds, while junior Ryan Kittrick did the same at the heavyweight class.
The second and final day of action at the CAA Championships continues tomorrow with the second round consolation matches beginning at 10 a.m.
