FAIRFAX, Va. - The Patriots (4-2) used a big first period to defeat St. Joseph's (2-4) on Saturday by a final score of 18-8. Mason outscored the Hawks 13-3, and took 25 shots compared to six for St. Joseph's in the period.
After senior attacker Kerry O'Connell put St. Joseph's on the board first with a goal 2:14 into the game, the Patriots went on a 13-2 run the rest of the period to put the game out of reach. Sophomore attacker Laura King scored all of her game-high three goals during the spurt.
Mason's defense kept the Hawks' leading scorer O'Connell in check. O'Connell entered the game with 18 goals, but was held to just two in the game, after scoring six in her last game, a St. Joseph's victory over Lafayette. Freshman Sarah Bohn and junior Jess Shelton led the Patriots with two caused turnovers apiece in the game, while junior Melissa Curry and sophomore Megan Bartlett both scooped up four ground balls.
Freshman goaltender Roxie Alsruhe earned her fourth win of the season, recording four saves. Bonnie Nelson relieved Alsruhe for the final 10:26 of the game and amassed seven saves, without allowing a single goal.
Mason's next game is scheduled for Wednesday, March 29 at 7 p.m. against Loyola at George Mason Stadium. The Greyhounds are ranked No. 20 in the latest IWLCA poll and have a 3-4 record in 2006.
