Fairfax, Va.--George Mason University's softball team lost a close 2-1 contest to Delaware Saturday afternoon at George Mason Field. Mason now stands at 0-27, while Delaware improves to 17-7. The second game of the doubleheader is knotted in a 1-1 tie at the top of the ninth and will resume tomorrow at noon.
Sophomore Katlyn Winter connected for a double in game one in the bottom of the second and was brought home by freshman Kyle Noro who hit a single and advanced to second on an error by the rightfielder.
The Patriots held off any scoring by the Blue Hens for the first six innings, but Delaware managed to score twice in the top of the seventh to pull ahead, 2-1. In Mason's final at bat, the Patriots came close but were unable to score any more runs.
Sophomore Arielle Weinkofsky was on the mound the entire game for the Patriots and gave up two runs off of three hits, while walking two and striking out five of the batters she faced. Carolynn Sloat pitched for UD and got the win as she gave up 10 hits and allowed only one run after walking three and striking out seven Patriots.
Mason's lone run in the second game was scored by sophomore Lesley Hassen as she smacked one over the fence for a solo homerun in the bottom of the second inning.
The Patriots will resume game two at noon on March 26 and game three will begin immediately following the conclusion of that contest.
