Eric Gibbons went eight innings allowing just four runs and no walks, but he was out-pitched on Friday night by Old Dominion's Kevin Gunnter, who tossed a three-hit shutout against the Patriots, fanning 11 without a walk as the Monarchs downed the Patriots, 4-0 in Colonial Athletic Association action. The game lasted just one hour and 36 minutes.
Old Dominion (15-3, 1-0) scored once in the first, twice in the fourth and once in the sixth while Mason (7-8, 2-2) never got a runner past first base. Gunter retured te first eight batters he faced before a Brent Weiss single to center in the third. He then retired eight more batters until Matt York singled in the sixth. Nine more Patriots went down in order before Spencer Wiggins single with two outs in the ninth.
The Monarchs were never able to put together a big inningn despite 12 hits off of Gibbons, who fell to 2-3. Old Dominion scored in the first on two singles and a sacrifice, in the fourth on a pair of solo home runs, and in the sixth on three singles.
The two teams are in action again on Saturday at 5 p.m. with Brent Hitz taking the mound for the Patriots.
