NEW YORK - Senior Quentin Matthews and freshman Murielle Ahoure both set new personal standards during the second and final day of competition at the Sixth Annual New Balance Collegiate Invitational, held at the Armory Track and Field Center in New York City.
Matthews finished tied for third in the high jump with a mark of 2.12 meters, smashing his previous career high of 2.10 meters. His best mark this season was 2.06 meters, set at the Father Diamond Invitational on Jan. 7.
Ahoure's personal best came in the 200-meter dash. The freshman qualified for the ECAC Championships by finishing the race in 24.99 seconds, easily beating her previous high of 25.40 seconds in the event.
Freshman Ryann Hendricks and senior Ashley Ackerley also performed well at the Armory. Hendricks finished ninth in the triple jump with a leap of 11.72 meters, the second best mark of her career. She jumped 11.82 meters at the Virginia Tech Invitational on Jan. 13. Ackerley finished in 10th place in the weight throw with a toss of 15.13 meters.
Senior Marc Kellman had a big day in the triple jump, posting a mark of 16.07 meters (52' 8 3/4"), his best leap of the indoor season. Kellman's previous best this year was 15.82 meters at the Father Diamond Invitational at the George Mason Fieldhouse on Jan. 7.
The women's 4x200 meter relay team of Murielle Ahoure, Misti Turner, Ryann Hendricks and Brittanie Williams placed second in the event with a time of 1:41.62, second only to the University of Pittsburgh's team of Shantea Calhoun, Shanea Calhoun, Raquel Bender and Julianna Reed, who finished in 1:39.83.
The men's 4x400 meter relay team of Mutsa Nyakabau, Andres Maldonado, Lennarz MacGregor and Javan Corniffe posted their best time of the season, finishing in 3:23.23.
Next up for the men is the Tyson Invitational on Feb. 11 in Fayetteville, Ark., while the women's team will compete at both the University of Arkansas and Boston University on Feb. 11.
