Fairfax, Va.--Mason's swimming & diving teams competed against Howard in their last dual meet of the regular season Friday evening at the Aquatic & Fitness Center on the campus of George Mason University. The women defeated HU by a score of 110-72, while the men claimed a 119-56 victory.
For the women, Mason won seven events, while the Lady Bison won four on the evening. The Patriots' 200-yard medley relay `B' team of junior Rebecca Jimenez (Fairfax, Va.), freshman Katie Kelly (Sayville, N.Y.), freshman Morgan Hall (Alexandria, Va.) and senior Lacy Richardson (Blue Ridge, Va.) started off the meet on a winning not as the Patriots finished first in a time of 1:52.59. Brooke Crowther (Jr.; Heathsville, Va.) swam the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 5:19.49 for first, while teammate senior Tara Mooney (State College, Pa.) placed second (5:31.25).
The 200 free was a close race as Jimenez crossed the finish line in 2:01.90, while Howard's Nzingha Murphy was a close second with a time of 2:02.85. Freshman Allie Smith (Winchester, Va.) beat out Howard's Aminah Murphy in the 50 free as Smith finished in a time of 25.36 and Murphy registered a time of 25.49. The remaining winners on the night were Kelly in the 200-yard IM (2:14.25), senior Liz Gabriel (Rockville, Md.) in the 3-meter diving event with a score of 290.47 and sophomore Sarah Bizer (Annandale, Va.) won the 100-yard butterfly (59.32).
On the men's side, the Patriots placed first in eight events, which included the 50-yard freestyle. Mason senior Matt McGillicuddy (Fairfax, Va.) and teammate Joe Houchin (So.; Chesterfield, Va.) were neck and neck at the end of the race, but McGilliuddy pulled ahead to finish in a time of 22.35 and Houchin was a very close second (22.36). Sophomore Matthew Kane (Chesterfield, Va.) won the 200 IM (1:58.93) and B.J. Dufresne (Jr.; Alexandria, Va.) came out ahead in the 100 fly with a time of 55.47.
Mason freshman diver Ryan Metzker (Springfield, Va.) tallied a score of 288.60 good for first place in the 3-meter diving event, while Justin Mallette (Fr.; Burke, Va.) came in second with 224.85 points. The 200 yard medley relay of senior Tim Norton (Virginia Beach, Va.), Kane, senior Eric Wellington (Alexandria, Va.) and Dufresne won in a time of 1:37.95 and Wellington went on to claim a first place finish in the 100 free later on in the evening (48.35).
The Patriots will return to action when they host the CAA Championships at the Aquatic and Fitness Center Feb. 22-25.
