FAIRFAX, Va. - In the final meet of the indoor season prior to the championships, the women's track and field team qualified another athlete for the ECAC Championships, scheduled for March 4-5 in Boston, Mass. Sophomore Misti Turner will join teammates Murielle Ahoure, Ryann Hendricks and Brittanie Williams at the championships on the strength of her 55-meter dash time of 7.24 seconds at the Winter Open Invitational, held at the George Mason Fieldhouse on Sunday.
The time is a new personal best for the sophomore, eclipsing her old mark of 7.25 seconds. She finished sixth in the event, while Ahoure took first with a time of 6.96 seconds. Ahoure also finished first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.81 seconds, which is a new personal best in the event for the freshman. Ahoure's previous best was a time of 24.99 seconds at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational at the Armory Track and Field Center on Feb. 4.
While the men didn't qualify any new athletes for the IC4A Championships in Boston, Mass. on March 4-5, sophomore Brian Hay did qualify in another event. Hay, already headed to the championships in the 60-meter hurdles, also qualified in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7.52 seconds. The Kingston, Jamaica native finished third in the event while teammate Steven Knight finished fifth with a time of 7.73 seconds, barely missing qualifying for the championships by one hundredth of a second.
Three men finished in first place at the meet. Freshman Javan Corniffe placed first in the 500-meter dash, finishing in 1:04.52. Sophomore John Crain finished first in the mile with a time of 4:24.40, a new personal best for Crain in the event, topping his previous best of 4:24.92. Senior Marc Kellman was tops in the triple jump with a leap of 15.99 meters (52 ft. 5 1/2 in.).
The women also had a winner in the triple jump. Hendricks finished first with a mark of 12.21 meters (40 ft. 3/4 in.), setting a new personal record for the freshman. Other notable performances for the women include personal record times for both Jonecia Gates (400-meter dash, 1:00.48) and Lyzzy Brumbaugh (mile, 5:32.49), along with second-place finishes by sophomore Melissa Ferry in the 800 meters and senior Ashley Ackerley in the weight throw.
Both the men and women will travel to Boston, Mass. next weekend for championship competition. The men will compete in the IC4A Championships while the women will compete in the ECAC Championships beginning on Saturday, March 4 and ending the next day.
Five men have qualified for the IC4A Championships - senior Sammy Sesay in the 60-meter dash, Corniffe in the 400- and 500-meter dash, Hay in the 55- and 60-meter hurdles, senior Quentin Matthews in the high jump and Kellman in both the long jump and triple jump. Kellman is currently ranked third in the NCAA in the triple jump, with a leap of 16.07 meters at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational at the Armory Track and Field Center on Feb. 4. Only Rafeeq Curry of Florida State (16.60 meters) and Alonzo Moore of Wisconsin (16.22 meters) have recorded higher marks this season.
The women have qualified four athletes for the ECAC Championships - Ahoure, Hendricks, Turner and freshman Brittanie Williams - along with the 4x400-meter relay team of Ahoure, Hendricks, Turner and Ferry. Ahoure has qualified for the championships in the 55-meter dash, 60-meter dash and 200-meter dash. The freshman has recorded the 29th fastest time in the NCAA during the indoor season in the 60-meter dash. Turner will join Ahoure in the 55-meter dash. Hendricks has qualified for two events - the long jump and the triple jump - and Williams has also qualified in the triple jump.
