FAIRFAX, Va. - The George Mason men's and women's track and field teams will host their final indoor meet of the season on Sunday at the George Mason Fieldhouse. The Mason Last Chance is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. with the women's long jump, women's pole vault and men's weight throw. Running events start at 11:15 a.m. with the men's distance medley.
Approximately 400 athletes from 24 different colleges are slated to compete on Sunday. Georgetown, James Madison, UNC-Wilmington, VCU and William and Mary are all scheduled to attend the meet, among others.
The meet will be both teams' final opportunity to qualify athletes for championship competition on March 4-5 in Boston, Mass. The men will compete in the IC4A Championships, while the women will compete in the ECAC Championships.
Five men have already qualified for the IC4A Championships - senior Sammy Sesay in the 60-meter dash, freshman Javan Corniffe in the 400-meter dash and 500-meter dash, sophomore Brian Hay in the 60-meter hurdles, senior Quentin Matthews in the high jump and senior Marc Kellman in both the long jump and triple jump. Kellman is currently ranked third in the NCAA in the triple jump, with a leap of 16.07 meters at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational at the Armory Track and Field Center on Feb. 4. The women have qualified three freshman athletes for the ECAC Championships - Murielle Ahoure, Ryann Hendricks and Brittanie Williams - along with the 4x400-meter relay team of Ahoure, Hendricks, sophomore Misti Turner and sophomore Melissa Ferry. Ahoure has qualified for the championships in the 55-meter dash, 60-meter dash and 200-meter dash. The freshman has recorded the 29th fastest time in the NCAA during the indoor season in the 60-meter dash.
