Women in Second, Men Third at CAA Championships

Fairfax, Va.--After the second day of the Colonial Athletic Association swimming & diving championships at the Aquatic & Fitness Center, Mason’s women’s team now stands in second with 180 points, while the men team is in third (178 points). Wilmington leads on both sides with 221 points for the women and 268 on the men’s side.

Junior Tom Koucheravy not only won the 500-yard freestyle, but he did it in a CAA meet record time of 4:23.99. Koucheravy crossed the finish line 13.25 seconds faster than Davidson’s Will Broughton, who placed second. Mason senior Tim Norton won the 200-yard IM in a time of 1:52.68, while Andrew Ryder placed third (1:53.27). Freshman Ryan Metzker also finished in the top-5 as he collected a score of 266.75 in the 1-meter diving finals to place fourth.

Sarah Bizer also had a record-setting day as she swam the preliminary race of the 50-free in a time of 23.72 seconds, which is a new Mason school record. Bizer posted a time of 23.84 in the finals for second place and was just 0.34 seconds behind the winner, Aly Hunt (Towson). In the women’s 400-yard medley relay, the Patriots earned 30 points for their team as the team of junior Rebecca Jimenez, junior Liz Ouzts, sophomore Brittany Surkovich and Bizer placed fourth (3:55.22).

The Patriots, and the rest of the championship field, will return to action tomorrow (Feb. 24) with preliminaries set to start at 10 a.m. and the finals will begin at 6 p.m.
